BikeOsh 2019 | A Community Event

BikeOsh is a great example of our community working together to create a successful event. Oshkosh North High School Communities’ students Nolan Spanbauer and Olivia Youngbauer roll out the story of BikeOsh’s beginnings.

What is BikeOsh and how did it get started?
BikeOsh is a free, city-wide event for all ages and skill levels that promotes healthy living, local businesses and bike culture. BikeOsh started as a bike to work event five years ago through Communities, a community-based learning program at Oshkosh North High School. The City of Oshkosh picked up the project and made it a yearly event.

What are some goals for the event?
To create more excitement about biking and exploring the diversity of Oshkosh.

What’s planned for this year?
Cyclists will bike to 20 pit stops (or as many as they’d like), and at each pit stop they will get a stamp on their Pedal Pass. The stamp will be equivalent to a raffle ticket that can be used at the end of the event at the Seniors Center.

Where can people find more information about BikeOsh, and if they’re not cyclists or haven’t ridden a bike in a while, can you recommend some local resources?
They can go to BikeOsh´s Facebook or Twitter pages for more information and updates about the event. If you haven't biked in a long time, you can go to your local bike stores. You could also take down your bike and check if everything works. If everything is fine, go to a local park and ride all over the park, or a not so busy road, ride in the bike lanes or sharrows with other cars.

This year's BikeOsh planning team is partnering with University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, Winnebago County Health Department, Winnebago County Parks and East Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission and many more.
