Unlock your creativity

How many times have you heard someone say, “I’m just not that creative.” Maybe you’ve even said it yourself.

It’s not true.

Everyone has the ability to use their imaginations. Turns out, human beings were born to create.

Studies have shown creativity is a skill that can be developed. One of the fastest ways to cruise down the creativity highway is to practice; and it helps a lot if you’re practicing with creative people. As the weather turns colder, and indoor activities beckon, take time to learn, explore and develop your inner artist.

Jessica Graf, co-owner of The Fire Escape in downtown Oshkosh, shares how she fires up her creativity and how you can too.

What do you like about being a creator/maker?
When you create something, you get lost in it. You get in the zone and the little to-do lists in your brain go away.

What are some of your favorite projects that you’ve done?
My favorite project is always the newest project that I’m working on (laughs)! My favorite types of projects are usually practical, in the sense that I can use it or gift it. So, I like wood signs because they look great in your home. I like painting pottery because you can make a mug or a bowl. But, I still like crafty things that are fun to make and look at.

How do you develop new projects for the studio?
Right now, we’re trying canvas wall hangings. If the tests go well, we’ll try making them at the studio. If that goes well, we’ll offer it to our customers.

What would you tell people who say they’re not creative?
Anyone can create something. Not everyone can create everything! It’s all about finding something you can create. It’s mostly about enjoying the process, though, and less about making a product that’s “beautiful.”

Our wood signs are done with a stencil, so anyone can do that. When we have people come to make pottery, we have a Design Center, so you can just pick a design and we’ll show you how to do it. We can use shaving cream and bubbles as two different techniques with the paint. It kind of gets people out of their comfort zones; there’s a lot of laughter when people are here with friends.

If you’re feeling uncreative, then you’ve got to just keep it simple. Then you won’t be overwhelmed. Make a plan. Keep it simple, and then just get lost in the process.

Thanks Jessica and Fire Escape for encouraging others to discover the joy in making something unique.
