Oshkosh Vital Records Index

Printer-friendly versionSend to friend

Search for vital records as reported in Oshkosh Wisconsin newspapers from 1861 to the present. This index covers primarily those records published in the Oshkosh Northwestern newspaper. The Northwestern was founded as a weekly in 1861. From 1868 to 1909 both daily and weekly editions were printed.   Since then, it has been a daily paper.   While there have been many short-lived competitors, the Northwestern was the city's only newspaper for most of the 1900s.

Index information & search tips

Results are displayed alphabetically by name and include all variations of the name you enter. If you enter "smith" you will first see "Coppersmith" then "Goldsmith" and so on until you see "Smith." If you are having difficulty locating an obituary, please check our search tips page. To obtain photocopies of any notices, please send a mail request.

Because portions of this index were drawn from old card files, some time periods have less breadth of coverage than others. For instance, the 1950-1999 obituaries were entered from files that covered Oshkosh residents only, rather than Winnebago County (Omro, Neenah, etc.) residents' obituaries. The 1861-1949 indexing is a joint project of the Winnebagoland Genealogical Society and the Oshkosh Public Library, and includes deaths from the entire county. From January 2000 to the present, modern computer technology has made it possible to include births and marriages as well as all deaths. In many cases additional information (such as names of parents or spouse) is available by clicking on the name. Indexing of the interim of November 2000 through December 2000 is in progress, and expected to be complete in 2007.

This is a project brought to you by the Oshkosh Public Library and the Winnefox Library System.
