Chicks with Sticks (it's a purl thing) by Elizabeth Lenhard
Since my daughter learned to knit as a teen, I picked up this book for her, and then read it myself. Scottie is taught to knit by an aunt during a stressful time in her life. Her friend Amanda finds knitting a way to feel competent despite her learning disability. A guidance counselor "prescribed yarn in lieu of Ritalin" for Tay, who promptly makes the counselor a hat. The foursome is completed by the flaky Bella. Under the guidance of Alice the knitting shop owner, they learn to knit and, of course, to value each other, and themselves. --MM
