On Tall Pine Lake by Dorothy Garlock

Nona Conrad and her sister Maggie are trying to start a new life in Arkansas at Tall Pine Lake fishing camp. Things aren’t going smoothly, Maggie was almost abduct by a stranger in town. The new owner of the camp, Simon Wright, offers his help. At first, Nona is reluctant, but she finds herself attracted to him. Is this related to the package that her brother sent her? Why is Simon so interested in helping her? Twists and turns throughout the book. The book is labeled Romance, but I don’t feel this book warrants that label. Many readers will not read this book because of the label. --SS

Thunderstruck by Erik Larson
The story of Dr.Hawley Crippen, a murderer, and Gugliemo Marconi, creator of radio communication, are interwoven in a story of one of the greatest criminal manhunts in history. Crippen was married to Belle, a spendthrift who was unfaithful and demanding. After apparently doing Belle in, he attempted to flee the country with his innocent lover and secretary Ethel. It was one of the first times wireless telegraphy was used to track a fugitive. Exciting, fast-paced story.  --SB

Takedown by Brad Thor
In pursuit of their captured fellow comrade, al-Qaida terrorists destroy all the bridges and tunnels into New York City. Anti-terrorist agent Scot Harvath and his team are assigned to stop the terrorists. In addition, they need to find out how the terrorists are finding out about the U.S. government hideouts for captured terrorists. In my opinion, the book started slow, but then the pace picks up, ending with a bang. Scot Harvath is the main character in many of Thor’s books. --SS

To see every bird on earth by Dan Koeppel (CD)
Nature and adventure writer (Audubon and National Geographic Adventure) writes about his father Richard, a “big lister” bird watcher. Richard is one of only ten or so people who have recorded more than 7000 birds in their lives. He stated at age 11, with a brown thrasher. Dan tells the story of his dad, who was pushed into medical school by his parents and never wanted to be a doctor. His mom, who married very young, wanted an adventurous, artistic life.
Richard eventually quit medicine to spend all his time birding. His relationships with family and friends fall by the wayside. He had an interesting life, but the birding info is what makes this book unique.  --SB

Can’t Wait to Get to Heaven by Fannie Flagg

Readers are taken back to Elmwood Springs, Missouri (town from two previous books) for the adventures of Elner Shimfissle. Mrs. Shimfissle has fallen out of her fig tree, been stung by wasps and headed to the hospital. That’s when the adventures begin for her and the people who she has touched in her life. I can’t say anything else, I’ll spoil the story. A delight to read or listen to. --SS

Farewell, my Subaru by Doug Fine

Experience the author's life being environmentally friendly.  He owns a farm in New Mexico with goats, solar heat and chickens.  Chapter on converting his car to vegetable oil is a hoot.  --SS

The man who loved China by Simon Winchester

Joseph Needham dedicated his life to studying China.  He first went to China in 1943 at the urging of his Chinese mistress, supported by the British government.  Needham saw China as a beautiful and mysterious land of innovation and discovery.  He spent the next several decades researching Chinese history and science for his definitive work "Science and Civilization in China."  Winchester also tells tales of Needham's personal life; he was known as an eccentric womanizer and egotist.  --SB

Deal breaker by Harlan Coben

New York Times best selling author Coben introduces a new sleuth, sports agent Myron Bolitar. Bolitar was a big time college basketball star, who had a career-ending injury in his first pro season. He is starting to establish himself as a sports agent, as is trying to sign Christian Steele, rookie quarterback, to a mega-millions deal. But Myron gets a call from his prize client, who has received a photo of a girlfriend who disappeared a year earlier. Is it from someone who is trying to blackmail Steele? Or is the girlfriend still alive?
Coben's mysteries have complex plots, and unexpected twists and turns. His characters are not your stereotypical private eye and his sidekick. Coben does not disappoint! --SB

Miss Julia Paints the Town by
Ann B. Ross

Another wild adventure with Miss Julia. This time, a developer wants to tear down the courthouse for condos and some of her friend's husbands are missing. When Miss Julia gets involved, you never know what's going to happen. Usually, I read the Miss Julia books, but happened to listen to this one. The narrator was wonderful. She had some stage background and used many different voices for the characters of the book. This made it so much more fun to listen to. --SS
