The article reveals that local government management is becoming increasingly unattractive to younger generations in the U.S. Viewing the situation as a crisis, the International City/ County Management Association (ICMA) considers recruiting new government managers a top priority and has created a number of programs to assist local governments with attracting and retaining younger administrators.
League of Wisconsin Municipalities
The League of Wisconsin Municipalities is comprised of 188 cities and 391 villages. The total number of cities and villages in Wisconsin is 190 and 402, respectively. League membership is limited to cities and villages in the state of Wisconsin.
National League of Cities
The National League of Cities is the oldest and largest national organization representing municipal governments throughout the United States.
Wisconsin City/County Management Association (WCMA)
WCMA is an organization of professional managers and administrators from counties, cities, villages, and towns throughout the state. The WCMA has two primary objectives:
- To promote the development of professional municipal management in Wisconsin, and
- To contribute to the professional development of its members.
U.S. Conference of Mayors
The U.S. Conference of Mayors (USCM) is the official nonpartisan organization of cities with populations of 30,000 or more. There are 1,139 such cities in the country today. Each city is represented in the Conference by its chief elected official, the mayor. The primary roles of The U.S. Conference of Mayors are to:
- Promote the development of effective national urban/suburban policy;
- Strengthen federal-city relationships;
- Ensure that federal policy meets urban needs;
- Provide mayors with leadership and management tools; and
- Create a forum in which mayors can share ideas and information.
