| ART GLASS The titles in this section provide context for Tiffany’s work with glass, both the windows and the lamps. Several titles are collectors’ guides, but focus on the field and its history rather than prices. The stained glass books listed are primarily beautifully illustrated histories. | DESIGN HISTORY | ||
| Louis Comfort Tiffany and the Tiffany Studios were active in a time of comprehensive design movements. His firm originated in 1879 in the Aesthetic Movement that emphasized art in interior decoration. The Arts & Crafts movement, a set of philosophical and social concepts as much as style, was important in his development. Tiffany is considered one of the major designers of Art Nouveau’s sinuous floral motifs. | ||

| In Pursuit of Beauty: Americans and the Aesthetic Movement / Doreen Bolger Burke …[et al.]. Metropolitan Museum of Art and Rizzoli, 1986. 709.73 I35. Covers the movement of the 1870s and 1880s that emphasized pattern and ornamentation in art decoration. Tiffany’s group “Associated Artists” was responsible for some of the outstanding interiors in the style. That firm dissolved in 1883 as Tiffany turned his attention to glass. |

| Beyond the Easel: Decorative Painting by Bonnard, Vuilllard, Denis and Roussel 1890-1930 / by Gloria Groom. Art Institute of Chicago, 2001. 759.4 G876b Art Nouveau proponent S. Bing visited the U.S. in 1894 and recruited young French artists to do designs for Tiffany, then working on complete interiors. They eventually undertook large or unusual scale decorative painting for private interiors in France in addition to their more familiar easel paintings. |

Louis Comfort Tiffany trained as a painter. He studied informally with the American landscape painter George Inness. Inness’ “The Approaching Storm” can be seen at the Oshkosh Public Museum. Tiffany studied painting in Europe and traveled and painted in North Africa and was influenced by Islamic decorative art and architecture. |
