Lily and Snow Flower share a special relationship as laotong, or "old sames."  The author does an excellent job of depicting life in 19th century China.  --Ruth

Mysteries

First family by David Baldacci

The United States' "First Family" is not always what it seems.  The First Family secrets are hidden deeply in their past, but events transpire that bring them to light.  A second subplot, exposing long-hidden secrets in another family, make this novel a must-read.  --Susan

Are you there, vodka?  It's me, Chelsea by Chelsea Handler

Chelsea has a very funny way of writing.  She explains her life, even the parts that I would NEVER admit to.  It's a hilarious book, but definitely not for children.  I would recommend for those 18+.  --Ashley

Just when I thought I'd dropped my last egg:  life and other calamities by Kathie Lee Gifford

This is the third of Kathie Lee's memoirs that I've read through the years.  In this latest one, she focuses mainly on her life since leaving the "Live with Regis and Kathie Lee" show.  I thoroughly enjoyed the humorous and inspirational glimpses into her crazy life.  --Ruth

Coop: a year of poultry, pigs, and parenting by Michael Perry

After reading Perry's books, I feel that I know him as a valued neighbor, albeit from Eau Claire, not Oshkosh!  This book is no exception--from planning a home birth, to building a chicken coop, to finding the perfect pigs to raise, Perry narrates his triumphs and learning experiences with humor.  --Susan

My horizontal life:  a collection of one-night stands by Chelsea Handler

This book was funnier than I expected it was going to be.  Chelsea Handler has a funny way of writing.  She tells about all aspects of her life from when she was little to the later twenties.  She sure gets herself into a lot of mischief with men.  Hilarious book.  --Ashley

This is the latest in the Lucas Davenport series.  Letty (Lucas and Weather's soon-to-be-adopted daughter) and Lucas work simultaneously to apprehend criminals during the Republican National Convention in St. Paul.  We know that Obama was elected President, but that certainly was not known at the time these events take place.  --Susan
