Maisie Dobbs is a private investigator/psychologist in Great Britain after WWI. In this 5th book of the series, Maisie digs deep into the buried secrets of a small village that suffered terrible losses in WWI. Hired by a corporation that wishes to purchase a company in the village, Maisie investigates a string of fires and small acts of theft that appear to revolve around the owner of that company. The story involves a Gypsy band and the legacy of a zeppelin bombing raid during WWI that destroyed the house of a baker and his family and took their lives. Maisie grows increasingly suspicious of the secrecy that surrounds the village and demands her highest level of detection skills.

The mystery is rich with period detail that skillfully invokes the lives and the landscapes of the English people between the two great wars. This is a very gripping read that will to keep you up late at night.
