Wisconsin Drunk Driving Laws
Effective July 1st, there were four main changes to the drunk driving law.  Fourth offense and first offense Operating While Intoxicated (OWI), Ignition interlocks devices (IIDs), and a greater emphasis on treatment for drunk drivers were changed.  The Wisconsin Dept. of Transportation has an explanation of the changes: http://bit.ly/cvtpIm.

Smoke Free Air Law
Effective July 5th, most public places will be smoke-free.  Two page publication explains what areas are smoke-free and if violated, the fine.

 

Donate Life Wisconsin

Become a potential donor of organs, tissues and eyes by signing up on a new online registry.  Donate Life Wisconsin website provides facts on organ donation, how to support the cause, and stories of hope.  If you have an orange dot on your license, it does not automatically put you into the database.  Those who agree to become an organ donor when they apply for and renew licenses in the future will be added automatically.

Electronic Recycling Event

Publisher, R.R. Donnelley, is hosting a residential electronics recycling event on Friday, Aug. 15, 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 16, 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.  The drop-off is at the R.R. Donnelley Midway plant - 800 Midway Rd., Menasha.  Acceptable drop-off items are TVs, computer monitors, CPUs and peripherals, scanners, printers, fax machines, ink jet and printer cartridges, stereo equipment, VCRs, regular and cellular telephones and rechargeable batteries.  This collection is free, courtesy of Sony's National Take Back Recycling Program in partnership with Waste Management.

Mortgage Counseling Hotline Available

The Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority announced a new hotline aimed at assisting callers facing foreclosure.  The hotline, operated by the Homeownership Preservation Foundation, will help individuals develop plans to keep their homes.  The hotline number is 1.888.995.4673.  The Winnebago County Sheriff's Department reported that sheriff's sales rose for the fourth consecutive year in 2007.  The department oversaw 253 auctions of foreclosed properties in 2007, a 20 percent increase from 2006.

WisconsinEye

WisconsinEye began live broadcast coverage on the Internet of the State Legislature this week. The organization has also made an agreement with Charter and Time Warner cable companies to broadcast on cable television. Cable launch date has not been announced yet. The library's Law Internet Subject Guide will have a link to WisconsinEye.

Health Coverage for Wisconsin Farmers

Farmer's Health Cooperative of Wisconsin is offering health coverage for Wisconsin farmers. The new plan is cooperative and governed by Wisconsin farmers. Farmers are eligible to enroll in one of six health insurance plans with coverage beginning as early as April 1, 2007. Contact Agri-Services Agency for more information at 1-800-539-9370.
